It’s peaceful here by the fire tonight. It’s so quiet, save for the desert wind outside, which is not strong, but with nothing to knock it down, it tends to rumble and roar. Samwise and Emily are napping on the couch. They end each day in this same contented state of tiredness.
As for me, I’m happy, too. This place does agree with me. I enjoy the light of this place, the dry, clean air, and the slow pace we’ve adopted.
Soon, we’ll step outside for one last time, and I’ll be dazzled by the heavenly firmament above us. Last night, Samwise woke us up at 2:00 am because he needed to go out. Emily and I joined him, and I felt as giddy as a schoolboy. Never had I had the stars bend down to peer at me so closely. It felt as though I could reach out and touch them. It felt as if they could do the same to me. Oh, these western skies!
