Thursday is a travel day and one of the best of the entire trip. We’re driving from Hood River along the Columbia River Gorge until we cut north to Spokane and east to Missoula. That’s Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana if you are keeping score. (Thinking of you, Brenda Logan.)
We’ll leave at sunrise and have eight hours of travel ahead of us. Along the way, we’ll do what I enjoy most, search out hidden treasures to walk. This will lengthen the time on the road, but for all the right reasons.
No one should sit for more than two hours at a time, but the way my right leg dwarfs my left is a reminder of one of the massive blood clots I had. So it’s every hour or ninety minutes for me. Samwise and Emily are happy with this arrangement.
Heading east, we’ll enjoy the gorge, but the real appeal will be the lush rolling farmlands we’ll encounter in Washington. They are absurdly fantastical. If I were to paint them, critics would say they look too cartoonish.
