Swimming Under the Constellations

Although neither Samwise nor Emily become overly anxious during Jackson’s Independence Day fireworks shows, they’re not fans. Sam sits up at the first searing shriek and the following bang(!) while Emily curls up against me. Her ears perk, and her eyes worry. Thankfully, that’s as bad as it gets for them, even though the explosions are only a few hundred yards away.

Deaf Will was never bothered, of course, and Atticus did not even blink. Back then, Atti and I typically climbed South Doublehead peak to watch the display far below us. Once, we even climbed Mount Washington at sunset to view the various displays, but we were so high that they could barely be seen.

I have been fortunate during the Fourth of July weekends with the dogs I have shared my home with. But I worry about the bears, the owls, crows, deer, moose, coyotes, and the foxes. How horrible it must be for their sensitive ears.

And, of course, I think about the legions of veterans with PTSD. My brother is one.
